As the temperatures rise and the days grow longer, summer in Waverly brings opportunities for outdoor fun, family vacations, and community events. At Waverly Rescue Squad, Inc., we want everyone in our community to enjoy a safe and healthy summer. Here are some important safety tips to help you and your loved ones stay protected all season long.
☀️ 1. Beat the Heat: Prevent Heat-Related Illnesses
High heat and humidity can lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion, or even heat stroke.
Stay safe by:
Drinking plenty of water — even if you’re not thirsty
Avoiding outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day (usually 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.)
Wearing lightweight, light-colored, and loose-fitting clothing
Never leaving children, elderly adults, or pets in a parked car
Know the signs of heat exhaustion: dizziness, nausea, headache, and heavy sweating. If you notice these symptoms, get to a cooler place and seek medical attention if needed.
🏊 2. Water Safety: Enjoy Pools and Lakes Responsibly
Water is a great way to cool off, but accidents can happen quickly.
Tips for safe swimming:
Always supervise children near water, even if they know how to swim
Make sure everyone wears a life jacket when boating
Avoid alcohol while swimming or supervising swimmers
Learn CPR — it can save a life in an emergency
🚲 3. Play It Safe Outdoors
Whether it’s biking, hiking, or playing sports, injuries can happen when we're active.
Stay safe by:
Wearing helmets and protective gear for activities like biking and skateboarding
Using sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) and reapplying every 2 hours
Checking for ticks after spending time in tall grass or wooded areas
Watching for signs of dehydration and fatigue
🧯 4. Grilling and Fire Safety
Cookouts and fireworks are summer staples, but they also carry fire risks.
Follow these safety steps:
Keep grills at least 10 feet away from buildings and never leave them unattended
Only use approved lighter fluids and never add them to an open flame
Never let children handle fireworks and always follow local laws
Keep a fire extinguisher or a bucket of water nearby
